Chocolate Baklava
Ingredients
• 1 package phyllo dough
• 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
• 1 cup Palma walnuts, finely chopped
• 1 cup Palma hazelnuts, finely chopped
• 1/4 cup sugar
• 1 tsp cinnamon
• 1 cup water
• 1 cup sugar
• 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
Preparation
1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a baking dish by greasing it lightly.
2. In a bowl, combine Palma walnuts and hazelnuts, sugar, and cinnamon.
3. Unroll the phyllo dough. Cover with a damp cloth to keep it from drying out.
4. Place one sheet of phyllo in the prepared dish. Brush with melted butter. Repeat with about 8 sheets.
5. Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the dough. Sprinkle some chocolate chips.
6. Layer four more phyllo sheets on top, with butter between each. Repeat the nut and chocolate chip layers.
7. Finish with 8 layers of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter.
8. Cut the baklava into desired shapes, then bake for about 50 minutes.
9. While baking, make the syrup. Boil water and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Simmer for about 20 minutes.
10. Pour the syrup over the hot baklava. Let it cool completely before serving.
